PART III - TAIWAN

-------

Sorry for being a bit late with the updates regarding recess week, it’s just hard to plan when to write these posts sometimes. But NOW I’m ready to share it with you: Taiwan!

We flew directly to Taipei (the capital city) and had booked two out of six nights in the city since we weren’t sure where we wanted to go after that. In the end we spent almost all our time in Taipei, except for one day and night which was spent in Tai Chung which was all in all really great!

Because of different wishes for housing we split up and stayed in two different places: me and Anni stayed in a hostel and Chris stayed in a hotel. We were still within walking distance from each other though. Me and Anni also decided to leave Taipei one day to go to Tai Ching while Chris stayed in Taipei.

SO, what did we do in Taiwan?

After a few hectic days in Hong Kong and Shenzhen we all felt that we wanted to slow things down a bit. Which I think we did, kind of. The first day in Taipei we visited a temple, walked around in the shopping districts, went to the botanical gardens and got a luxurious foot massage (it wasn’t that luxurious though). At night we met up with two locals (one was Chris´ friend) and they took us to the biggest night market in the city. We jumped from stall to stall in the night market and got to try a lot of new taiwanese food while having interesting conversations. Really good night!

Day 2 we rented bicycles and biked for 2-3 hours (with drinks- and ‘fika’ stops) until we came to the last metro station northward. After having a really nice and big lunch at a vegetarian restaurant and a stroll in the city we took the metro back to the hostel. At night we went to a bar/restaurant and had a few nice (finally) beers and good conversations.

Day 3 me and Anni took the train to Tai Chung, a city in the middle of the country. We walked around on new streets, visited shopping malls and parks. At night we went to another night market to have dinner and then went back to the hostel where we ended the night in the lounge area with a bottle of plum wine.

The next day we went to the National Natural History & Science Museum before taking the train back to Taipei. Since this was the ‘last’ night in Taipei we decided to splurge a little extra and therefore went out for drinks at a few cool bars.

On the last day we went hiking to the ‘Elephant mountain’ where we got a good view of the city and of the famous tower ‘Taipei 101’. After that we went back to the city to try and get movie tickets to Johnny English. As we found out the tickets were sold out we decided to instead watch Venom. The cinema room was one of the biggest I’ve ever been in which was pretty cool to experience. When the movie was done we walked around a bit more in the city and then headed to the airport to take the flight back to Singapore!

All in all I think Taiwan is a really good country to travel in and I would describe it as a combination between Singapore and China. Most people can speak english but it’s still a bit hard to get around and to order food sometimes. From what we saw everything is much more organised and clean than in China, but still far from the level in which Singapore is. It also felt like Taiwan was a really safe country to be in.

THERE was my little novel of how I experiences this country. I hope this all gives you a better understanding of how my experience in these countries were and what I’ve seen and done!
